The issue is definitely not nginx...the failed requests return 502, and in nginx logs, it throws resource unavailable because php-fpm cannot handle the concurrency. I'm going to put varnish in front of nginx tomorrow, to see if that will take a significant amount of load off nginx. My only issue is with getting sessions right, given that vbulletin is pretty state-heavy.

The fact is to support the size of the community we are looking at, long-term plans need to be made. This means serious server capabilities. Club simply does not have the critical mass to donate enough cash to support a massive forum.

Just to add on, after we fix the load issues, I'll start working on the UI. The UI is a separate thing from the back end, almost entirely.

Thanks for the updates. try haproxy and varnish, manage the static content and optimize nginx.
Nginx can easily handles much more than 200 concurrencies. You might have to increase your server resources.

Congrats to the site. 2 things for recommendation
1) Kindly do not send the password over the email It's in plaintext over the Internet
2) Try having the Cloudflare CDN for start. Will help with load issues
