Girl gang raped by mom's political rival, committed suicide

It is perhaps the ugliest and first such case in political rivalry in the country that a teen age girl was gang-raped, and the ill-fated girl ended her life due to police inaction. The daughter of a winning woman BDC member was allegedly gang raped by two men of rival group on Wednesday night in Padari area of Mirzapur district. The dejected girl committed suicide on Friday, a day after the police refused to lodge FIR against the accused. Following her suicide the police swung into action and arrested the two accused.
According to reports, the girl, a class 11 student, was allegedly abducted from her house on Wednesday night by two men when she was sleeping in her house in Padari police station area of Mirzapur district. They forcefully took the girl away in the field and gang raped her. With unbearable trauma the girl returned home and narrated the whole story to her mother, who recently won the BDC election. The girl recognized the accused belonging to rival group.

The mother along with her daughter and other family members went to police station on Thursday to lodge a complaint. But, according to girl's mother, instead of lodging FIR the police gave only verbal assurance and asked them to return home. Later, succumbing to trauma and humiliation the girl committed suicide by hanging herself in her house on Friday.
After getting this information the police became active and lodged FIR against Pappu Bahelia and Bindu Bahelia under relevant sections of IPC and POCSO Act 2012, and arrested both of them. The body was sent for postmortem.
The Mirzapur SP Arvind Sen, when contacted on Saturday, admitted that the girl was gang raped in poll rivalry. He told to TOI that the accused were relatives of the losing candidate in BDC election. On delay in police action, he said that the matter is being investigated, and appropriate action would be taken in this regard.
