How did they become who they are? Who's their ultimate boss? What's the worst thing that can happen to them?

You mean Tua Li Ya Pek?

To cut a long story short, they were a couple of Song Dynasty cops who died heroes' deaths in the line of duty.

The Netherworld Judges were so impressed by their dedication to duty that they appointed them as spiritual cops in the next world, tasking them with fetching the souls of the dead and subduing evil spirits.

They have been cloned (think Jango Fett) to provide Hell with an efficient army of constables, thus explaining why so many pairs of of Tua Li Ya Pek exist.

The clones retain the personalities of the original pair by default, but a number have since gained traits, identities and even fashion statements of their own via meritorious service, explaining why we have pairs with different names and costumes from the originals.

The worst thing that can happen to them, like any other spirit being, is final death - permanent extinguishing of the soul.

There is no 'dang ki code of silence'.

Whatever questions I had for my teacher, who was a veteran dang ki, he answered freely and in detail.

Never once did he say "I can't answer that question" or "I can't disclose that".

In his wise words, those who cite a code of secrecy are those who have dirt to hide.

To be fair, most devotees don't bother asking much, let alone ask any thought-provoking questions.
