Football: StarHub secures multi-year rights to broadcast Spanish La Liga matches
http://www.straitstimes.com/sport/football/football-starhub-secures-multi-year-rights-to-broadcast-spanish-la-liga-matches
SINGAPORE - StarHub announced on Wednesday that it has secured a multi-year agreement for the rights to broadcast the Spanish Primera Liga matches. The games will be shown in high definition on StarHub TV and on StarHub Go.
Live coverage will begin on Wednesday night, with Real Madrid playing Real Sociedad at 11pm on SuperSports 2 (Ch 202). Subsequent matches will be broadcast on SuperSports 2, as well as on StarHub's free cable channel SuperSports Arena (Ch 112/205 and 76.25MHz).
Said Mr Howie Lau, StarHub's chief marketing officer: "Our broadcast of La Liga underlines our commitment to football fans in Singapore. We always take the feedback from our customers seriously and have been working hard to bring La Liga back to Singapore screens.
"Today, we are happy to say that Sports Group customers will be able to get front row seats to the footballing spectacle put up by world class players such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar."
One of the strongest professional football leagues in the world, the Spanish La Liga consists of 20 teams including defending champions Barcelona and Valencia, which is owned by Singaporean businessman Peter Lim.
In the past decade, Spanish clubs have won a total of 11 Champions League and Europa League titles.
This season, La Liga is the only league in Europe with all its teams still competing in the knockout stages of continental competitions (Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the Champions League; Valencia, Sevilla, Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League).
Said Valencia president Chan Lay Hoon: "I am delighted that StarHub will be providing coverage of both Valencia's La Liga and Europa League matches.
"StarHub's support ensures that our fans in Singapore will be able to closely follow the team's progress on TV. The club is nothing without our fans so this gives all the players a big boost for the second half of the campaign."
Singapore viewers will need a Sports Group subscription to access SuperSports 2. In addition, Sports Group subscribers will be able to catch La Liga matches on their mobile devices. For more information, please visit www.starhub.com/sports-group.
